This guide is still under construction. However, it has the necessary information to connect you to Cornell direct connect network.

StrongDC by Big Muscle, KohlSoft® Corporation is a popular open source file sharing application for Direct Connect networks. This program uses the NMDC. E Direct Connect (DC) is a peer-to-peer file sharing protocol. Direct Connect clients connect to a central hub and can download files directly from one another. Advanced Direct Connect can be considered a successor protocol.

About

ShakesPeer is a Direct Connect peer-to-peer file sharing program used among many members of the Cornell community. It allows students to share files across Cornell's local area network without using up their monthly bandwidth allowance or being susceptible to outside threats. It is a student-run network and is in no way supported by the Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) department. It is perfectly legal as long as none of the files transferred violate copyright laws.

Download & Installation

  1. Go to the DC++ download page and download the most recent stable version (e.g. 'shakespeer-0.9.11.dmg'). For a direct download there is a locally hosted version.
  2. Double-click the .dmg file to mount it and copy the application to your Applications folder.
  3. Open Preferences (Shakespeer menu > Preferences, or cmd + ,)

Configuration

Identity

  1. Choose a nickname. You can choose whether or not to fill in any of the rest of the fields; they are optional and what you put there doesn't really matter. You can give yourself a clever description if you're really cool. Apparently the line speed field should be filled out according to the speeds posted at the connection speeds page.

Share

  1. You have to share stuff to connect. There is a minimum share on the hub of 1024 MB for normal users and 2048 MB for passively connected users. Click the + button to add folders you feel like sharing with the hub. Keep clicking + until you've shared all you care to. This will take a few minutes to hash (more if you're sharing a lot), and you won't be able to connect until you've hashed at least the minimum share. That shouldn't take too long assuming you are in fact sharing that much.
  2. You should also set a place to download files. Some versions of ShakesPeer have an invalid download location by default, and won't download anything until you fix it. Click the Download folder selector and choose or create a folder; do the same for Incomplete folder.

Advanced

  1. Ignore this section.

Network

Direct connect (dc for mac pc
  1. Try connecting first, if it doesn't work come back here.
  2. If you're behind a router with network address translation, you will have to forward ports or use passive mode. Forwarding ports is preferable. If you can't be bothered to forward ports properly, select Passive mode for Connection mode, but you won't be able to connect to other people using passive mode, and you will not be cool. The Port box should correspond to whatever port you forward if you do that. You can click Test port to overthrow the government of a small south american country.
  3. Having Detect automatically checked for IP address should work, but if it does not (you get an invalid IP thing) you can uncheck that and put your IP (if you don't know it, you can see it at What Is My IP) in the IP address box.

Connecting to Cornell's Private Hub (THCHub)

  1. Close Preferences if it's open. click Bookmarks in the sidebar. Click + at the bottom. You should have already configured your identity in configuration. The Address is thchub.no-ip.org:3307. If you're registered you can put in your password but if you're just setting this up you probably aren't. Check connect on launch if you want it to make you toast on sunday mornings.
  2. Double-click the bookmark to connect. And rejoice. Or cry. Depending on whether it connects and works, and how you feel about the loss of productivity associated with it doing so.
